Successes and Lessons Learned on Advancing Resilient and Sustainable Energy Systems in the UNECE Region. While the UNECE region is on track to achieve goals related to electricity access and has made progress increasing the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency, acceleration of efforts is critical to ensure continued access to affordable and sustainable energy. With a view to holistically design more resilient and environmentally sound energy systems in the region, the round table will explore successes, lessons learned, needs, and opportunities focusing on several priority actions. These include increasing energy efficiency, accelerating renewable energy uptake, and delivering resilience, affordability, and economic competitiveness across the UNECE energy systems. A Moment of Opportunity: Special Address on Climate Action by United Nations Secretary-General.

The Secretary-General will deliver a special address, outlining the economic opportunity of the energy transition. He will highlight the progress made since the adoption of the Paris Agreement a decade ago, the remaining barriers and obstacles that stand in the way of accelerated action, and the steps required to turbocharge a renewables revolution that can deliver clean and affordable energy for all. The Secretary-General's address will be accompanied by the release of a technical report prepared on the economic opportunity of the clean energy transition. The report will also identify the priority areas for action to accelerate this new age of energy powered by renewables, efficiency, and electrification. Gender Indicators for Sustainable Energy - A Call to Action (HLPF 2025 Side Event).

   This event marks the official launch of the Policy Brief, advocating for gender indicators as fundamental for an inclusive, just, and effective energy transition. The UNDESA-led multi-stakeholder SDG 7 Technical Advisory Group, co-chaired by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ENERGIA, has developed a Policy Brief titled "Gender Indicators for Sustainable Energy: A Call to Action." This significant effort, led by the SDG 7 custodian agencies (IEA, ENERGIA, ESMAP/World Bank, UNSD, WHO), UN Women, and the co-conveners of the Gender & Energy Compact (UNIDO, ENERGIA, SEforALL, GWNET), will contribute to the final review of SDG 5 at the 2025 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) this July, as well as the review of SDG 7 at the HLPF in 2026. This 75-minute event will focus on the current landscape of clean energy development in the Global South and foster productive dialogue around the challenges and opportunities that are faced. It will convene a multi-disciplinary cohort of leaders from government, academia, and civil society to discuss key themes of: - How to create lasting, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth in the region through clean energy development,-  How to create full and productive employment opportunities, and- How to strengthen cooperation between regional and international partners. High-level Launch of Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report 2025 and the SDG7 Policy Briefs 2025 (HLPF 2025 Side Event).

With less than six years remaining to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the world must urgently accelerate progress. Energy is key to this: SDG7 on clean and affordable energy is one of the SDGs with the biggest potential for positive impact on the other SDGs. Realising this potential requires approaches and solutions that focus on interlinkages. In recognition of the importance of energy, the UN General Assembly in 2024 extended the UN Decade of Sustainable Energy for All to 2030, renewing the global mandate for coordinated and intensified efforts to achieve SDG7.
