Future Generations: Positioning the UN Towards Long-Term Thinking (HLPF 2025 Side Event).


HLPF 2025 Side Event organized by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Executive Office of the Secretary-General.

This side event explores how the international community and the United Nations can move from commitment to action in addressing the needs and interests of Future Generations. The Declaration on Future Generations, adopted at the 2024 Summit of the Future, is a key milestone for integrating a long term perspective into global decision-making. It particularly consider urges long-term present-day institutions to impacts and promote intergenerational fairness.

Building on the outcomes of the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, the event brings together Member States, UN entities and civil society to share concrete approaches, tools and experiences for implementing future-oriented governance. It will highlight how anticipatory planning, foresight and long-term thinking can support sustainable development and contribute to a more resilient and inclusive multilateral system in times of uncertainty.
