Introduced in 2020, the SDG 6 Special Event takes place annually during the High-level Political Forum giving space for discussion on water-related targets within the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework. At the mid-point between the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference and the previous UN 2023 Water Conference - which saw over 800 commitments from governments, civil society, and the private sector under the Water Action Agenda - this Special Event will feature a discussion on how the inclusive and collaborative preparatory process driven by Senegal and the United Arab Emirates is building continuity and catalyzing global action for SDG 6 . The Secretary-General will deliver a special address, outlining the economic opportunity of the energy transition. He will highlight the progress made since the adoption of the Paris Agreement a decade ago, the remaining barriers and obstacles that stand in the way of accelerated action, and the steps required to turbocharge a renewables revolution that can deliver clean and affordable energy for all. The Secretary-General's address will be accompanied by the release of a technical report prepared on the economic opportunity of the clean energy transition. This High-level Side Event co-hosted by the peer learning countries Finland, Germany, Guatemala, Indonesia, Nigeria, Thailand and South Africa will shine a spotlight on the remarkable achievements of third-time reporters to this year's HLPF.
